Key Question: What does it mean to seek God?

Biblical Truth: God offered Israel a choice of whether or not to seek Him.

Biblical Context: This is the sixth lesson in a series examining the characteristics of God’s covenant. The fifth lesson detailed how God promised to punish the Israelites for breaking the covenant, and this lesson looks at God’s provision of a way back to Him. Amos, earliest of the writing prophets, was chosen by God to deliver a harsh message of judgment to Israel. Ever since Jeroboam I led Israel to sin by making two golden calves for the people to worship at Bethel and Dan (1 Kings 12:26–30), God’s anger toward His chosen people had been growing. The majority of the kings who led Israel in the next 200 years followed in Jeroboam’s footsteps by doing evil in the eyes of the Lord. God sent warnings to Israel, but they did not listen. God promised—and delivered—His judgment. But in this passage, we see God’s compassion. He still allowed His people the choice to turn back.
